NurZahra Heritage - Indigo Batik

A Greener Approach to Contemporary Hijab Fashion
The exciting journey to the simple, stylish and comfortable hijab wearcontinues with the NurZahra Heritage. The new line of headscarf, pashmina, tunic and maxi dress from NurZahra will add versatility to modern Moslem women fashion by combining the lightness andbreeze of cotton voile with the exclusive indigo batik design.
The use of batik in the design of the Heritage was an easy decision. It’s our cultural heritage that comprises the sophisticated batik keratonand the ingenious yet dynamic batik pesisir; both symbolize class and vigor. And in the NurZahra Heritage, the classical elements of Indonesian batik are blended with modern ideas from other parts the world that results in a fresh universal design of stunning geometricallines.
The NurZahra Heritage also pushes the envelope further by embracing ecological friendly process in the production of its indigo batik collection. The print design on all item is created using natural dye from plants like indigo for the blue color, while yellow and green, for instance, are extracted naturally from the skin of morinda citrifolia and the trunk of mahogany respectively. It’s the same method used by our ancestors to produce long-lasting and vibrant colors. The technique is also proven to be safe for the environment because thewaste will do nothing but reducing the acid level of the soil.
Special emphasis is given to maximize comfort by the use of cottonvoile fabric that is practical, airy and easy to care for. And with contemporary batik design in an array of natural colors, the Heritage will provide plenty of choices for casual as well as formal occasions. The NurZahra Heritage is, therefore, a perfect fit for the Moslem women of today who aspire to stay covered, fashionable and environmentally conscious.

For most people, grass is not the first thing to come to mind when someone says “sculpture” or “art”, but one man in indonesia is using a native grass to create life-size sculptures. Here’s a closer look from our correspondent in Jakarta:
Makroni is a new type of sculptor. His medium is a native grass that is traditionally used to bundle vegetables. Makroni uses the grass to create life-size sculptures of animals. To accomplish this unique art form Makroni uses special knots—he knows more 2500 of them. Among his sculptures is a rendering of an Ox, inspired by this year’s animal in the Chinese zodiac.
Makroni’s art is becoming popular with tourists and sought after by collectors. His life-sized pieces routinely sell for $5,000.
[Makroni, Grass Sculptor]: (MALE SOUNDBITE)
This grass is usually used to tie bunches of vegetables together, but now it has been replaced by rubber bands, so I thought of another way to make use of it—I make this art.
Makroni also makes smaller sculptures that make good souvenirs and are hot sellers with tourists. But his real love is for his large creations. To finish one of his large works it takes him three months and over one acre of grass. Makroni grows all of the grass he uses on his own land.
His grass art has sometimes raised some eyebrows, especially with his neighbors who were surprised that he would use all of his land to grow grass, but Makroni sees hijmself as a bit of a sculpture visionaire.
[Makroni, Grass Sculptor]: (MALE SOUNDBITE)
People are confused.. what kind of art is this? Then, people began to ask my name.. Makroni.. and soon it became known as ‘Makroni Art’. After I die the Makroni art form will live on.”
And Makroni’s art is definitely “green”.
[Titi Lestari, Art Expert]: (FEMALE SOUNDBITE)
He lives the true recycling-life. He makes use of something we thought couldn’t be useful, but he’s shown that it is. The art produced is beautiful and liked by many people.
The Makroni stand is open everyday in the Art Market of Ancol. There people can view pieces from his collection and watch demonstrations of the grass sculpture technique.

okay so these are the ink sketches that I made today in the Gondang Dia market (a traditional market near my university.. err not really since we need a 10 minute walk to get there).
we were asked by our lecturer to draw the veggies and meats in the market. I wasn’t really sure if we have to focus on the object or we have to draw the environment as well so I drew both.
and also the sketch are getting lamer and lamer because drawing in a smelly, hot and damp traditional market is not an easy thing to do, but yeah its really fun because people are so nice there and also funny. using ink and pen in a place like this wasn’t easy too and I ended up spilling the ink to my bag, weeh.
